Students have been facing up to Shakespeare – with new ways to learn about the Bard.

Art specialists have been working with the youngsters at Dartmouth Academy as they study Shakespeare's Scottish play, Macbeth.

Artists Anna Uhr Delia and Marc Farrell, photographer Andy Carter and make-up artist Karen Rigby joined the youngsters to help give them a unique visual insight into the characters they are learning about.

Part of the work involving envisaging their own faces as a canvas to create an image on, representing the character they had chosen and then seeing it created by Karen.

Andy then took pictures of them to show off their ideas in a dramatic and exciting way.

Macbeth is on the GCSE curriculum.

Students will link this work not only with English but also with their art and design GCSE work.

Nicola Perrott, head of art and design, said: 'We invited in professionals from the local area in order to teach specialised skills as well as enabling our students to learn more about the creative industries and the very broad range of employment opportunities using Art and Design.

'The images and makeup design they created were vibrant, dramatic and expressed the deep motivations of their chosen characters from the play – which will help them in their English studies.'

Student Charlotte Passmore said: 'It was good to spend a whole day in a creative environment with specialists to help see your ideas come alive.'
