Martin McGowan-Scanlon, of Bay View, Stoke Fleming, writes: I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the puerile antics of so-called 'affordable housing champion' Cllr Steve Smith. First he makes a laughing stock out of himself and the town council with his 'Millionaires Row' suggestion, and then says he will 'celebrate when a developer comes to this parish with the prime objective to build affordable housing'. In the real world, not the Narnia inhabited by parts of the town council and BID, developers are in business to make a profit. We all see and agree the need for affordable housing, but potty gestures do not draw attention to the lack of this housing but instead to the lack of a coherent policy from Cllr Smith and his ilk. I suggest his time would be much better spent formulating a workable affordable housing policy, putting in place a method of raising the cash required, and then providing the affordable housing direct rather than expecting that a silly name will lead to the needy being housed. On a separate note, I wholeheartedly agree with Martin Judd's excellent letter about providing what the cruise ships want in order to attract them here. This could be achieved by putting in place a proper improvement plan to enhance tourism in the town for everyone's benefit. Maybe we could raise some money from the traders in the town and have a committee to oversee its spend for the benefit of all of them. As it would focus on business improvement, perhaps we could call it something like BID for short. Oh...
