Dick Lloyd, of Sherford, writes:

I am pleased that the High Court has now endorsed the suggestion made in my letter, Gazette, July 8, under the title ‘A hasty retreat is not on the cards’ saying that Parliament should decide on the terms by which we leave the EU.

Allowing that remain campaigners such as myself have to accept the result of the referendum, we do not have to stand by while an unelected Conservative Prime Minister and her inner sanctum decide in secret what those terms should be and impose them on the electorate, hiding behind the royal prerogative without a proper debate in Parliament.

The hard-line Brexiteers scream that the judiciary is trying to change the will of the electorate. This is nonsense. The judiciary is making no attempt to alter the verdict of the referendum at all, but is merely ensuring that the terms are decided by Parliament, in accordance with our unwritten constitution.

King Charles I lost his head because he defied the will of Parliament.

Theresa May will not be executed because we have abolished capital punishment, but she ought to have her political wings well clipped.
