ERT CRANMER, of Broadstone, Dartmouth, writes:

The residents of Dartmouth have won their first parking battle but have yet to win the war.

Devon County Council has now dropped its proposals to do away with unrestricted winter parking in the town; this now remains unaltered.

However, we have yet to see the county council's proposals concerning the extension of the yellow lines around the town and thereby the loss of a large number of parking spaces.

It would be extremely arrogant of the county council to disregard the recent guidance from both Eric Pickles, the Communities Secretary, and the House of Commons Transport Committee who have come out strongly against unnecessary yellow lines.

The county council is planning an exhibition at the Guildhall to outline its proposals ,probably at the end of the month.

We must resist any loss of parking spaces.

If there had been a multitude of accidents or problems for the emergency services – so be it. Otherwise we suggest they leave it alone.

The campaign group Residents Oppose Parking Enforcement will keep a watching brief on these county council proposals and will act appropriately if the need arises.

We urge everyone to attend this exhibition and make their comments and views known.
