JOAN KING, of Lower Fairview Road, Dartmouth, writes:
I would like to endorse the sentiments expressed by S Vickery in last week's paper concerning the cessation of bus services to Plymouth and Totnes routes via Victoria Road, and would like to know why this was done without contacting the local people; especially very many old folk who hold senior bus cards, along the Victoria Road route, and have relied on the withdrawn services to get out of Dartmouth for shopping in other towns, many items are unobtainable here nowadays.
My husband and I are both in our late 80s, I hold a blue disabled badge, neither of us driving now, so depend on public transport. We cannot walk distances and wait at cold/wet bus stops at a distance anymore, so feel very isolated and cut off. We don't have family in this country to help us out, the taxi fares for pensioners is another problem especially when not available, as often is the case. Anyone will tell you.
I have been told the bus drivers don't like driving up Victoria Road, they have been doing it for some time before now. Also, guest house owners don't like passengers peering into bedroom windows – oh my goodness, poor visitors –what's happened to net curtains and opaque glass? They don't even live here and contribute to rates.
Dare I mention the loss of 111 bus to Torquay Hospital, this has meant great pressure on the services of Dartmouth Caring, and other kind folk to get the sick to hospital for appointments etc.
I request a complete review by the town council, bus service operators and other bodies into the situation. There are very many who feel a grievance on this issue. Thank you, S Vickery for raising the issue.
