Dartmouth Academy youngsters have been finding their voice for Christmas as they filled St Saviour's Church for a carol service – and rang some bells.

Students ranging from nine to 16 years of age took part in the event.

They performed a wide-range of music led by academy music specialist and musical director Sue Baxter with accompanist – and leader of the Britannia Royal Naval College volunteer band – Phil Watson.

The performances included bell ringing by a group from Years 5 and 6, a folk song performance, a marimba arrangement as well as the popular Year 10 steel band.

The choir, made up of Years 8 and 11 students, sang two pieces with a solo sung by Ellie Farnsworth. Four Year 7 boys took and Georgia Mills from Year 8 sang solos as well.

St Savour's Church was packed with the youngster's friends and relatives as well as other members of the community.

Sue Baxter said: 'It was a wonderful night of festive music which gave all of our students the chance to shine.

'I'm delighted at the brilliant performances that everyone gave, but the beautiful solo by Ellie Farnsworth deserves special mention.

'The hard work put in by all our groups over the last few weeks paid off with a show which all of our students can be very proud of.

'I would like to thank Phil Watson for his superb accompaniment and help during the night.

'All the parents, carers, relatives and friends who came along helped to create a wonderful atmosphere which really was something special.

'It was a magnificent evening to start the Christmas celebrations.'

Academy principal Nick Hindmarsh said: 'Well done to all the students who took part and did so well at this great event. Sue Baxter has worked very hard to prepare for this concert and I'd like to congratulate her too.'
