CLLR MELVYN STONE, ward member, of Woodland Park,?Paignton, writes: Regarding your article 'Tourism may not be the answer for town' in November 14's Chronicle – neither is becoming a ghost town. I agree with encouraging people to support our local shops. Perhaps we should refund the cost of parking? Or introduce a loyalty card? To me a public meeting to resolve the issue may have been the better approach. Our listed Grade I buildings, so well-preserved, are a great draw. Throughout the season perhaps we should display the flags of all nations to encourage cruise ships to return and capture a Dartmouth welcome. Another highlight is Dartmouth In Bloom – after all, three gold awards is blooming marvellous. Major Wooley welcomed and entertained King Charles, our sovereign king, who stayed in the Butterwalk – what an advert for our museum: the street 'Kings Way' should return; Charles heraldry could be put on display in the museum, which has already steamed ahead with great results. Also, Queen Elizabeth I; the Spanish Armada; the Devon Sea Dogs; Drake; Raleigh; the Crusades; the third Crusade of impressive strength by King Richard I in 1190, who sailed out of Dartmouth to the Holy Land to win freedom for all and to see the birthplace of Jesus in Bethlehem. People responded to witness this miracle. As ward member, may I wish it good luck in the future.
