David Lingard, chairman of Dartmouth Museum, writes: I noted with considerable interest the recent letter from Miss Uphill of Swanage, Keep history of town together, May 16. I assume she is the daughter of the remarkable and dedicated Mrs May Uphill who – sometimes almost single handedly – looked after the old Henley Museum in Anzac Street, Dartmouth, for some 30 years. I am pleased to say that the extraordinary story of William Henley is indeed told in a modern, exciting and child-friendly way in the Henley Study at Dartmouth Museum. The other two rooms tell of Dartmouth's social history and its strong maritime connections. The Henley books, archives and other items are currently part of a major conservation programme taking place in the newly refurbished Jesse Room with a strong team from both the museum and History Research Group. We would be delighted – indeed privileged in view of the family connection – to show the progress and methods to Miss Uphill. The Henley Collection remains alive and well and fully available for the public to examine during our opening hours on every day of the year except Christmas, Boxing and New Years Days. To view specific archives, however, an appointment should be sought.
