In his letter recently Waly Boemclas suggested that English people might voluntarily adopt the German 'quiet time' by not using loud garden machinery from Saturday lunch time through Sunday.

I have lived in Germany and really appreciated the peace of the 'Ruhezeit'.  And, with a continental climate, I had no problem avoiding mowing the lawn etc on a Sunday.

After moving back here six years ago, I continued the practice. It was again no problem.  This year it would be possible to avoid mowing the lawn on a Sunday.  But in previous 'summers'... What if the only dry day of the week fell on a Sunday? The idea is a good one, weather permitting.
