Martin McGowan-Scanlon, of Halwell, writes: I wish to offer my condolences to Mr TM Smyth for the loss of his hour's sleep when awoken by celebrations of our fine young men and women who will go on to command the Royal Navy around the world in various hotspots. Of course, as soon as he phoned they should have immediately stopped any fun they were having – I believe this may happen three times a year – and crept back to bed for fear that the hard-working 40- something Mr Smyth should lose the other 40 minutes of his precious sleep time.  I also wish that if Mr Smyth should venture abroad at any time in the future and be confronted by natural disaster or war or pestilence the Royal Navy should leave him to his own devices. Dartmouth, and by extension Kingswear, is very much a part of the naval tradition and, as such, Mr Smyth really ought not to be so mealy mouthed about it. I am sure he is regretting the publicity of his rant by now.  As for the 'black rapper', I asked what he was rapping and apparently it was this: 'Yo you sleepy worka cross de river, get yo a*** up and greet de day. Don be such a miserable bro, cos peeps may tink you eightyo.'
