THE prestigious Lord High Admiral's Divisions will take place at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth on Thursday. This year's salute will be taken by General Sir Richard Barrons, the head of Joint Forces Command, representing the Lord High Admiral, the Duke of Edinburgh. The parade will mark the formal commissioning as naval officers of the cadets of Illustrious, Iron Duke, Sutherland and Somerset Divisions, who embarked on their 30-week initial naval training course last year. General Barrons will inspect the parade and take the salute. He will also present prizes to cadets recognising significant achievements during training. The prizes cover the last year and are awarded on an annual basis. Lord High Admiral's Divisions is the most prestigious parade in the BRNC calendar. As well as the friends and families of the cadets, the parade will be attended by representatives from foreign navies, who regularly send their cadets to BRNC for training, and other dignitaries. The title Lord High Admiral dates back to the 14th century and was conferred to the Duke of Edinburgh by the Queen on the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2011. The Joint Forces Command manages allocated joint capabilities from the three armed services. General Barrons reports to the Chief of Defence Staff and is accountable to the Permanent Under Secretary of the Ministry of Defence as a top level budget holder.
