Over £3,000 is to be shared between two local charities.

The coastwatch station at Froward Point near Kingswear and Devon in Sight will be sharing the money after hard work from Debbie Beechey, her staff and the kind customers at the Two Mile Oak Inn near Abbotskerswell.

Over the last 12 months, the money has been raised by hosting donated book sales, collection boxes and a successful Christmas Draw. Each charity received £1,585.

The Two Mile Oak Inn has a special connection with Devon in Sight since the county-wide charity has been helping the former Two Mile Oak supervisor Chris Tester and his family after Chris was shot and blinded during a robbery at his parent’s business in Antigua At Christmas, 2016.

Devon in Sight helped over 2,500 clients annually and is in need of constant funds to support their extensive expert services.

Cathy Duffy from Devon in Sight said: “ We are so grateful for all the hard work and support of the staff and customers. It is so important that we are able to reach as many people with sight loss as possible and to continue with our service to the community.”

Froward Point station manager, Glyn Watkin said he was delighted with the donation and said it would be used to provide much needed Health and Safety improvements for the coastwatch volunteers.

The Froward Point station, established in 2005 requires an average of £12,000 annually to provide its ‘Eyes along the coast’ service for mariners and walkers.

Since 2014, Debbie from the Two Mile Oak Inn said she has valued the regular help of her staff and said the donations will ensure both charities are there when needed by the community.
