Cllr Stephen Smith, Townstal Ward, writes: Regarding the story 'Lower Ferry could be sold by council', Chronicle, March 5, I share Cllrs Hawkins' and Brazil's concern with this consideration and wonder why a district council income generation should be considered as a millstone around the neck of the public purse? Consider it on merit alone: it is a vital front-line transport link for both motorists and foot passengers. I know that there is no suggestion of closing it, but selling to a private operator, unless contractual conditions are made, will see said operator instigate its own operating procedures, which will not always be in the best interest of the community as regards the price structure. So the whole issue should be handled properly. And may I suggest that is should be up for discussion following the May 7 elections, which are only eight weeks away? The inner sanctum, aka the inner cabinet members discussing this now, may not necessarily be in their positions after the May elections. So hold your horses on this and when the new members are elected let them first open this up for public consultation before they even look at options. Simply consign the whole idea to a file and put it neatly into the inner sanctum/cabinet 'in' tray.
