Charity Dart Sailability has published its sailing and social programme and said it looks forward to welcoming new and existing members - including sailors and volunteers - this summer.

Formed in 1997, the charity enables anyone with any disability to enjoy sailing, boating and social activities.

The first sailing day is scheduled for May 7 and a thorough programme of induction and training starts in April ensuring everything is ship shape for the new season at Dartside Quay in Galmpton.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “We’ve expanded our fleet to enable more people to sail and enjoy boating activities on the River Dart. Regular racing sessions take place at Dittisham Sailing Club throughout the summer and a highlight of our calendar is the Dartmouth Regatta when our sailors dress up to the nines! We have a stand for the regatta’s family weekend – August 20 to 21 - so if anyone would like to help please let us know.”

Regular Sailing sessions last a couple of hours and take place throughout the week depending on the tides. Experienced sailors can go out solo and other options include forays on bigger yachts including the charity’s new RS Venture.

Other social highlights include a trip up the river to the Malsters pub at Tuckenhay for fish and chips on June 22; annual barbecue at the Royal Dart Yacht Club on July 15; the charity’s famous Swallows and Amazons style ‘sausage sizzle’ on July on the banks of the river.

The spokesperson added: “Our charity is entirely run and managed by volunteers so if you can lend a hand we’d be delighted to see you. Likewise, if you have a disability get in touch and we also cater for groups.”
