Cllr Rosemary Rowe, acting chairman, South Devon AONB partnership committee, writes: With reference to the report concerning the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, I would like to correct a number of inaccuracies. First, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is not 'pulling' its funding from the South Devon AONB Unit. Defra funding has already been confirmed for the year 2015-16 at the same level as 2014-15. The minister, Lord De Mauley, reaffirmed Defra's commitment to the 34 English AONB zones at the National Association for the organisation's annual conference. Second, while Defra has indeed decided not to be part of a new Memorandum of Agreement from April 2015, this does not affect the level of funding. It does mean that Defra will no longer take a share of any potential redundancy costs for AONB staff units, but a new MoA currently being prepared anticipates making Devon County Council and South Hams District Council jointly responsible for meeting any such future costs. Third, the South Hams Council executive committee resolved on October 23 to complete a T18 analysis of the current activity of the South Devon AONB team for consideration as part of the review of future options being conducted by the AONB partnership committee. This does not represent a standalone procedure, but one that will be considered as part of a wide-ranging review to look at ensuring the most appropriate delivery model for 2016-17 onwards. The South Devon AONB unit continues to deliver a range of projects, with communities and businesses strengthening the connections with the landscape for wildlife, people and the local economy.
