A CUTE but prickly creature has been born at Woodlands Family Theme Park near Dartmouth. The baby African crested porcupine, known as a porcupette, who is yet to be named, was born to mother Afryea and father Koho. Woodlands zoo-farm head keeper Michaela Newham said: 'We are very proud as they have only been at Woodlands for a year. Both mother and father, who are two years old, are first-time parents and have taken to it really well. 'They are very protective of their new baby who is getting more adventurous and exploring its enclosure.' The gestation period for porcupines is 112 days. The young are born with soft spines and remain in the nest until they are about two weeks old. Crested porcupines are nocturnal and in the wild spend the night foraging for food. Their wild diet consists of bark, roots and some fruit. Michaela added: 'Their favorite treat is sweetcorn, it doesn't last very long.' 'Animal enrichment is very important to us and we make sure they have plenty of sticks and logs which helps keep their teeth strong and healthy. 'They also like to play with plastic balls which they enjoy pushing around their enclosure.' Guests can visit the porcupine family at Woodlands zoo-farm this May half-term.
