RICHARD RENDLE, of Ferndale, Dartmouth, writes:
I read a recent report of a council meeting where one councillor stated 'We own the buildings we can do what we like'.
This statement is completely untrue and unfair to new or inexperienced councillors.
No individual councillor or even full council own anything. They are simply custodians of town assets while in office and, by signing the statuary notice of acceptance on taking office, they are obligated by law to maintain all town property and keep it fit for purpose. That is why they receive council tax.
Council does not have a mandate to run down get rid or sell off any assets without first seeking a wide consultation with the community.
If considering selling off the Guildhall is part of a grand plan to update the town's amenities with enhanced modern facilities. it is very much welcomed and should be applauded.
However, if any facilities are being deliberately run down to force a sale, cover debt, mismanagement or finance other projects, which are not the responsibility of the council, then it is unforgivable.
Would councillors please provide the public with a fully costed plan of their suggestions for the Guildhall and their vision for the council's new headquarters and what they intend to do with the many artefacts, such as the historic paintings in the council chamber, all of which have been refurbished at the tax payers' expense and is part of the town's proud heritage?
Failure to do this could result in the Guildhall being listed as a 'priority building' which would then tie the hands of council for many years to come.
