The recent article on the crash of the Wasp helicopter flying out from Norton 40 years ago reminds us that this tragic event is sliding out of personal recollection into written history.

Future military historians researching this incident may need to know that the crash did not occur 50 yards south of the hangar, as you report, but just over 1,000 yards away to the south east.

The crash site was close to the Stoke Fleming road where it dips and bends just beyond the academy playing field.

For those with a 1:25000 scale OS map, the crash site is at the blue letter 'p' of 'Spr'.  The burnt area of the crash could be clearly seen by motorists travelling towards Dartmouth and remained visible for a long time.

The military historians might also like to know that, even as the control tower was being constructed, it was common knowledge that the heliport was to be closed by MoD.
