Paul Lewis, of Beaumont Close, Weston-super-Mare, north Somerset, writes: As a very unhappy, disenfranchised chalet owner from Norton Park, I have been following with interest the letters and articles regarding the Dartmouth Business Improvement District over the past few months. It is very apparent how fortunate we are to have a newspaper that is willing to report impartially both sides of this dispute. Because of very badly compiled legislation having been passed by Parliament, a large number of small businesses have been placed in a very difficult situation through no fault of their own. With regard to Steve Peacock's article, Chronicle, March 6, I feel that there are two points in particular that need to be set straight. First, he says 'a majority of businesses voted for the BID', which is definitely not true. A very small minority of businesses voted in favour of the BID: 170 chalet owners were left totally unaware of the BID as their mail was not sent to their business addresses but to the chalets, which are not registered postal addresses, as they do not have letter boxes and in many cases are unoccupied for six months of the year. This alone was enough to wipe out the majority of 49, to say nothing of all those people who were unaware of the implications of not voting and who thought it just more junk mail and consigned it to the recycling bin. Second, I also feel very angry at being accused of baulking at putting my hand in my pocket to support the BID. I object very strongly to the attitude of those people who think they have the right to put their hand in my pocket and take out money without so much as a by your leave. It is not only what it has done, but the way it has been done. It is very apparent by the number of businesspeople willing to be taken to court just how strong the feeling of antipathy is towards this whole ill-conceived scheme. Let me admonish all those of you who live locally and have been unwillingly conscripted into becoming fully paid-up members – get in there and sort them out. There is certainly enough of you.
