LYDIA GUY, of Townstal Road, Dartmouth, writes:
I am writing in response to Richard Mallock who 'condemned Dartmouth' for its lack of Christmas lights, went home early and may not bother to return, Lack of lights spoil family's Christmas joy, Chronicle, January 13.
Well, Torquay has plenty of garish lights, a frantic high street and, for me, no spirit at all. Dartmouth is different.
Our town looked lovely, was quietly festive and the atmosphere was peaceful.
I only shop within the Dartmouth area and found the shops looked festive, the staff cheerful and everyone I smiled at returned my smile. Perhaps Mr Mallock was so busy being critical he forgot to smile?
Festive does not mean flashy. One of the Oxford English Dictionary's definitions of festive is 'joyous'.
The people I spoke to seemed happy and contented and were looking forward to celebrating Christmas, whatever their circumstances.
I think the Christmas spirit comes from within and not without.
