Kevin Pyne, of Lake Street, Dartmouth, writes: Surly when the town is full then that is enough. Why, then, do we need the Business Improvement District? And why are decent, hard-working folk who love the town being made the subject of threats and court summonses? Surely it's not too much to ask that organisations such as the district council leave us be. After all, as I have said many times, we ran our affairs for a thousand years without them and we could happily do it again. It is plainly obvious that we are now nothing but numbers to its largely émigré officers, who have moved from large, soulless authorities and now see us, the little people, as fodder for their grandiose, ill-explained and unwanted schemes. Moreover, those among us who don't care if we end up ruining the complex relationship between our town and its visitors for a quick buck should be ashamed of their gross and misguided oversight. I hate the town when it is that full, especially as there's no need, because at that point the real moneyed people just drive on and will bypass it. It is also unfair to look down from the rim of the town at those of us stuck right in the middle of this envisaged overcrowdedness. And to those who are being threatened, the truth is that you are modern martyrs to a hideous and damming scheme that will destroy all that we love about our town and the very core of the reason why we love to live within it. Stick to your guns, hawks or no hawks, and despite the squawks of those who won't ever be happy to just live in towns by a river as beautiful as ours and expect from their galleries, which are already doing nicely, even greater salaries. The plain fact is that, even if we are elbowed aside time and time again, we the private citizens have as much right to live here and enjoy our lifestyle, even if it is forgotten about by the district council and overzealous, greedy traders, who have no more right than we have to shape the future of all our homes that we all pay hefty community charges for.
