ANNETTE ROSSER, of Crowthers Hill, Dartmouth, writes:

Once upon a time, not so many years ago, Crowthers Hill still had families living on it who for generations had handed down by word of mouth the history of the town, its river, trades and roads.

When I moved onto the hill I was lucky enough to meet such families and hear about my old house, which was built up on the ‘stable’ next to the butcher.

What a shame that Mr and Mrs O’Connell plan to create a

14-bay car park at Jawbone Hill.

When we celebrate The Mayflower in 2020, remember that she will have taken on stores and they will have come down Jawbones, past the slaughter house to the butchers, and horses from the stable will have been up and down from farms to quay with a cart.

Dartington sponsored a survey of Devon hedges and Waterpool was found to be one of the oldest, the walled banks being some of the best, especially the high left-hand bank on the uphill side of the proposed parking on Jawbones.

So I am sad to find we seem unable to stop the destruction of this town and its remarkable history and beautiful countryside.
