Michael Chambers, of Victoria Road, Dartmouth, writes: I read Robin Dadson's letter with interest, Chronicle, March 6, as I also feel that the Business Improvement District is somewhat ill-conceived. Dartmouth is already a popular place to visit in the summer and, to my knowledge, most hotels and B&Bs are taken at this time – mine certainly is – so where will these extra visitors stay? If we are talking about day trippers, they cannot park as we know, so they don't stay very long. I often hear from visitors that they would like to spend more time here – and hopefully more money – but they have to move the car. Having just endured a very long and tough winter in terms of trade, well down on this time last year, I would ask: has the BID team thought of marketing Dartmouth as an out-of-season destination? It's still a lovely place then and many businesses drop their prices at this time, so some very good deals can be done. Parking restrictions are also lifted in many places. I'm sure there will be those who say too many businesses close in winter, but I'm sure, if there was trade around, they would not. Who wants to run a business with its doors closed? As one of those on the list who settled the bill at the last minute, I have to accept, whether I like it or not, that we are stuck with the BID, so we can only hope and pray that some good comes of it.
