A South Hams charity which helps people with learning disabilities is reaching out to small local businesses to help raise funds by pledging a percentage of their profits.

Dartington-based Lifeworks says small businesses are the lifeblood of the UK’s economy and all, from altruistic accountants to compassionate crafters, can really make a big difference to charitable organisations.

Lifeworks believes consumers increasingly want to buy from and champion businesses that are led by their values, and says it would love to talk to any businesses interested in putting “purpose alongside profit.”

Stuart Devlin, the charity’s digital fundraising officer, said: “By partnering with Lifeworks you will play a key role in improving the futures of people with learning disabilities and their families, whilst achieving your CSR objectives and strengthening your brand.”

With 5.8 million small businesses in the UK, collectively the small business community can have a hugely positive impact on society says Lifeworks; but currently just two per cent of the country’s charities’ income comes from businesses - compared to 43 per cent from individuals.

Lifeworks says it wants to play a part in moving the needle on that two per cent and is keen to increase its support from small businesses to enable the charity to ensure local children, young people and adults with learning disabilities access opportunities to reach their full potential.

Businesses can donate either as a percentage of their sales or a percentage of their profits.
