JOHNNY CHICK, The Old Market, Dartmouth, writes:
These famous words were recently overheard in Dartmouth: 'I will be Mayor one day.'
The reply was: 'Yes, and one day will be enough.'
I think these words should be carved in stone rather than the name of our deputy mayor.
Perhaps if he is taking all the credit for the new development of the Old Market he should also be responsible for the £75,000 that was needed for going over budget, or shall we just forget about that?
It is remarkable that if yet another plaque is going to be put in place for a mere £300 – a lot more than that I think – the money would have been better spent on fitting each new unit with an extra and much-needed double electric socket, cost £330.
I am thinking I might have my own stone put in place outside my shop, as I believe I have contributed as much towards the development as anyone else, although I didn't go over budget.
Upon it I will have something like 'The Man Who Would Be King', great film; or 'Here lies the man who wrote what he thought' chiselled across it!
Before I finally blow a fuse and take refuge in the local asylum, I have to mention the new community cafe that is about to be completed and the famous headstone layed to rest outside its doors.
I did once visit the famous war office of Winston Churchill and I am convinced the interior design was copied from that very room... the only thing missing is the fine aroma of cigar smoke; strip lights to die for; lino from a bingo hall, tables from a village hall in 1941; and finally, but not fitted yet, surely somewhere there must be the compulsory net curtains!
The amazing thing is that someone is going to try and take credit for it, I wonder which unfortunate contender that will be?
There is now a waiting list for the new units which are currently all let.
I shall be joining the waiting list as I believe there is an opening for a stonemasonry business here in the Old Market!
