David Cullen, of Victoria Heights, Dartmouth, writes: Further to the article regarding camper vans parking on the embankment, as a person who visits the Portuguese Algarve regularly, I write with personal experience of the detrimental consequences these vehicles and their occupants can have. I fully endorse the comments of Mr Harris to Dartmouth Town Council and would advise Cllr Fyson that the only effective way of preventing a deluge of these visitors is to make them all park elsewhere, for instance, and in the absence of a local site that caters for camper vans, at the park-and-ride car park opposite Sainsbury's. It is obvious to me that the owners will park at the embankment now that summer parking restrictions have ended and they can use the free shower and toilet facilities at Royal Avenue Gardens, which were intended for visiting boat owners. The difference between boats and camper vans being that boating visitors pay mooring fees, while camper van occupants park for free. Furthermore, the Portuguese lesson has also taught me that generally the camper van fraternity will live frugally and the benefit to the local economy is limited to purchasing necessities in supermarkets. I urge the council to take action now – the alternative will result in the embankment being used as a permanent camper van parking area.
