Cllr Stephen Smith, Townstal Ward, Dartmouth Town Council, writes:    Friday's would not ever be the same if I did not get engrossed into my weekly edition of the Dartmouth Chronicle, but I have long wondered on this one and maybe it could be viewed as sarcastic, but a good example is last week's edition. It was 48 pages and 14 of them were devoted to advertisements for housing, with prices over £1m, several at £750,000, and many above the £250,000. I guess that the majority of your readership are as poor as church mice, so flicking over these advertisement pages may send this majority into a haze of 'if only' dreams and wishes. Could the editorial team consider communicating with our estate agents which continuously advertise these desirable properties, that they might run a section possibly headed 'Low cost and affordable', maybe just once a month, to assure those on low incomes that life is fair for all. I guess that South Hams Newspapers' income from estate agents' advertising is quite considerable and if they weren't to advertise, this could drastically affect the selling price of those homes, so perhaps, tongue in cheek, we must be grateful for this. But I am thinking of the young families who are considering their future in our wonderful town. Some are struggling to make ends meet and reading about £1m or £500,000 properties does not give them any hope for the future. So please let's have on occasions 14 pages of affordable properties, to let these people know that they are not tossed aside and forgotten.
