Adrian Booker, of Milton Lane, Dartmouth, writes:

I refer to the letter from John Tremlett, Chronicle, July 12, who was talking about the high cost of a possible regatta visit by the Vulcan.

At the recent Yeovilton Air Day, I was privileged to enjoy the 'Vulcan experience'.

The aircraft appeared over the airfield slowly, gracefully and quietly.

Then, as full power and reheat were applied to her four massive Olympus gas turbine engines, she lifted her nose skyward, and as the whole world turned to thunder, she did her party piece – the turbo climb! You don't see the Vulcan experience, you feel it!

How can a machine built for such a terrible purpose simultaneously appear both beautiful and sinister?

This aircraft has boosted gates at air shows to the extent that they have had to turn people away. Everyone wants to see the Vulcan!

I hope, Mr Tremlett, that I can share the Vulcan experience with 14,000 people during Dartmouth Regatta.
