DARTMOUTH Academy has welcomed a talented new music teacher to the fold.

Anthony Chamberlain is an experienced singer, musician, writer, director and actor who has appeared on stage in the London musical Les Miserables and in popular TV shows including Lark Rise to Candleford.

Anthony, who was performing arts co-ordinator at Ivybridge Community College, is the first to fill the academy's new teaching role, which was created after the former head of music, Sue Baxter, stepped down following a long career at the Milton Lane site.

A trained opera singer who can also play piano, guitar, drums, saxophone, accordion and banjo, Anthony has pledged to continue Sue's commitment to high teaching standards and offering students the chance to learn instruments.

Anthony said: 'I am thrilled to be offered this opportunity in a school that is so clearly passionate about learning and where there is such an obvious ethos of enjoyment of and for learning.'

He has already forged strong links with the Dartmouth community through taking part in the previous two Dartmouth Shakespeare Weeks.

Last year he was the male lead in As You Like It and this year will be playing the iconic role of Malvolio in the event's tenth anniversary production of Twelfth Night.

Nicola Perrott, director of learning for creativity and physical development at the academy, said: 'He has a good deal of experience in music and the performing arts; is very experienced in putting on a number of high quality performances with huge audiences; he's highly skilled in instrument and voice; and passionate about taking music and the performing arts at the academy to ever new heights.'
